Technical Lead II, Infrastructure Costs

Engineering

Remote - USA

About HubSpot & Platform Infrastructure:

HubSpot is on a mission to help millions of organizations grow better. Our Platform Infrastructure teams are the foundation of this mission, building and maintaining the critical systems that power HubSpot's entire product suite. We operate at massive scale, supporting over 205,000 customers across 100 countries with thousands of services deployed 6,000 times daily across 170+ engineering teams. Our infrastructure handles billions of requests and processes terabytes of data daily, making reliability, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness paramount to our success.

The Platform Infrastructure group brings together talented engineers who are passionate about building world-class infrastructure that empowers product teams to move fast while maintaining stability and controlling costs. You'll join teams that are defining how modern SaaS platforms operate at scale.

About the Infrastructure Costs Team:

Step into the heart of HubSpot's financial efficiency with the Infrastructure Costs team! We are the guardians of cost intelligence, processing massive volumes of cost and usage data to provide unprecedented visibility into HubSpot's infrastructure spending. Our mission is to integrate cost awareness as a powerful tool, not a blocker, enabling teams to make informed decisions that balance innovation with financial responsibility.

Our team maintains critical systems including Peano, our sophisticated cost attribution pipeline that breaks down billions of dollars in AWS spend into actionable insights, and ReserveManager, our custom automation that achieves 99% Reserved Instance coverage while eliminating traditional commitment constraints, saving millions annually. We've turned cost management into a competitive advantage, negotiating industry-leading discounts and building monitoring systems that catch runaway costs before they impact the business.

Currently supporting all 170+ engineering teams at HubSpot, we're focused on scaling our capabilities to include multi-cloud cost optimization, carbon emissions tracking, and predictive cost modeling. Our work directly impacts HubSpot's unit economics and enables data-driven decisions about product pricing, customer segmentation, and infrastructure investments.

The Opportunity: Technical Lead II

As a Technical Lead II on the Infrastructure Costs team, you will be a player-coach, leading a dedicated team of approximately 3-5 engineers. You are, first and foremost, a skilled and passionate engineer who thrives on building data-intensive systems at scale. This role offers a unique blend of hands-on technical contribution (approximately 75% of your time) and technical leadership responsibilities (25%), where you'll guide your team in designing, developing, and maintaining high-performance cost analytics and optimization solutions.

What You'll Do:

Technical Excellence & Hands-on Development:

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain robust data pipelines and services for cost processing, primarily using Java and data processing frameworks like Spark and other OSS technologies like Kafka, HBase
  • Tackle complex technical challenges such as processing terabytes of cost data daily, building real-time cost anomaly detection, and creating automated cost optimization systems
  • Architect solutions for multi-cloud cost attribution, predictive cost modeling, and capacity planning systems
  • Champion best practices in data engineering, including data quality, pipeline reliability, monitoring, and performance optimization
  • Dive deep into AWS billing APIs, Reserved Instance mechanics, and cloud pricing models to build innovative cost optimization strategies

Infrastructure & Team Leadership:

  • Collaborate closely with other Infrastructure teams, Finance, and Engineering leadership to define strategic cost optimization initiatives aligned with HubSpot's growth objectives
  • Actively contribute to shaping the technical direction and architecture of cost management systems that will scale with HubSpot's continued growth
  • Proactively own and improve your team's operational health, including on-call processes for critical cost monitoring systems, data pipeline reliability, and overall data quality
  • Partner with other Tech Leads across Infrastructure to drive broader efficiency initiatives and establish cost-aware engineering practices
  • Lead and mentor a team of software engineers, fostering an environment of autonomy, psychological safety, and continuous learning in the specialized domain of cloud cost optimization
  • Guide your team in becoming subject matter experts who can effectively communicate complex cost concepts to engineering teams across the organization

Performance & Growth:

  • Evaluate the performance of your team members, providing constructive feedback, coaching, and identifying learning opportunities to support their career progression
  • Build expertise within your team on cloud economics, data engineering, and financial systems

We're Looking For Someone Who:

  • Is an experienced Senior Software Engineer with a proven track record of designing and delivering complex, scalable data processing systems, ideally with experience in financial systems, data pipelines, or cloud infrastructure
  • Has some prior experience leading small engineering teams or mentoring junior engineers
  • Possesses strong proficiency in Java, with deep experience in data processing frameworks, AWS services, and building high-throughput data pipelines
  • Has strong analytical skills and comfort working with large datasets, SQL, and data visualization tools
  • Demonstrates curiosity about cloud economics, cost optimization, and the intersection of engineering and finance
  • Is passionate about building reliable, efficient systems and enjoys the challenge of processing and making sense of massive amounts of data
  • Excels at fostering an inclusive team environment that encourages autonomy, psychological safety, and open communication
  • Sets a high bar for data quality and system reliability, with experience managing critical data pipelines and monitoring systems
  • Understands the value of building diverse teams and actively champions Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging
  • Is an excellent communicator who can translate complex technical and financial concepts into clear insights for both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Takes pride in enabling other teams' success through tooling, automation, and actionable cost intelligence
  • Is eager to learn and adapt in the rapidly evolving cloud cost optimization space, while coaching others and building team expertise
