HubSpot's website platform, blogging, and landing pages apps are all integrated as part of a fully-featured marketing platform, including training and support. WordPress is a stand-alone blog and CMS tool. This page will help you decide which is right for your business.

Now you can have that robust CMS that you had with WordPress, and actually integrate it with your tools in HubSpot. For us it was a game changer."

Blog

HubSpot

  • HubSpot's blog was built from the ground up around changes that Google made to their search results and upcoming trends in the industry including social search and responsive design. The blog is tightly integrated with other HubSpot tools including CTAs, contact lists, and workflows. The blog is also connected to a tool to create email subscriptions from the blog's RSS feed.

WordPress

  • WordPress comes with a standard blogging platform out of the box where you can write and publish posts. There is no integration with any other tools.

Landing Pages

HubSpot

  • Using HubSpot's landing page tool, users can easily add forms on landing pages that automatically build lists and create workflows. The landing pages can also be personalized based on a viewer's lifecycle stage or list. Users can figure out which landing pages are the most successful with the detailed analytics report connected to each page.

WordPress

  • WordPress has two general categories, standard website pages and blog posts. To create a landing page, you need to use a form plugin that requires some configuration on the back end.

Website Pages

HubSpot

  • HubSpot's site pages work with social media, the CTA generator, and SEO tools to create the best possible experience for website visitors. Marketers can create websites without code by using the drag-and-drop template editor.

WordPress

  • WordPress allows you to create drafts, schedule publication, insert media, and publish pages. Plugins can be used to add more bells and whistles to your pages.

Designing on the Blog, Landing Pages, and Site Pages

HubSpot

  • HubSpot offers a handful of collections of landing pages, site pages, and email templates for free that are fully supported by HubSpot. There are an additional 525 templates available for purchase that are designed by marketing agencies and top designers and optimized for conversions. Additionally, HubSpot now offers five free themes for your website. Find out more here.

  • HubSpot has an easy WYSIWYG editor with an as-you-type preview to show you your edits as you type them. You can also view a live preview for mobile devices and tablets. HubSpot has a drag and drop template builder and built in tools to help you create call-to-action buttons, forms and other website elements.

  • HubSpot’s COS is automatically responsive to all screen sizes.

  • Using HubSpot's COS, designers and developers can do almost everything. The only limitations are there are no database-driven pages and no server-side code (e.g. PHP).

  • The HubSpot COS includes SSL at no additional cost (with the Website add-on).

WordPress

  • WordPress offers thousands of themes. Some are free, and some have a fee associated with them.

  • WordPress also uses a WYSIWYG editor. Forms and CTA tools on Wordpress are typically built using plug-ins.

  • WordPress has responsive themes available, but be careful to double check that you are using a responsive theme.

  • WordPress has plugins available for design and developer features, but using too many plugins can cause problems for WordPress users including hacked sites and page speed issues.

The best thing about the COS is how easy it is to use. After creating a template I am able to add content, visuals, and HubSpot CTAs just as easily as I would via the email tool. The HubSpot reporting that comes along with it is far more advanced than WordPress. Thanks to the COS our website is easier to manage and looks amazing!"

SEO

HubSpot

  • HubSpot has its roots built in SEO. HubSpot's COS and blog were built around changes that Google made to their search results and upcoming trends in this industry including social search and responsive design. HubSpot consultants also work on an SEO strategy with you so when Google's algorithm changes, you have an expert telling you how to adjust your marketing strategy.

WordPress

  • WordPress doesn't come with SEO tools out of the box. WordPress offers SEO plugins that can help you optimize content, give you advice on how to fix your SEO, and learn about on-site and off-site SEO.

Analytics

analytics_02

HubSpot

  • HubSpot records events continuously, covering the complete customer lifecycle, from first interaction to most recent conversion. HubSpot Analytics targets and contextualizes your contacts with data-rich, individual profiles and complete database reporting.

WordPress

  • WordPress can show you how many views and visitors you are getting by the day, week, or month. It shows you views by country, top posts and pages, where your clicks are coming from, and your most popular topics. For additional reporting, there are plugins you can install.

Contact Lists, Email, Workflows

analytics_02

HubSpot

  • HubSpot's email tool utilizes the integration with contact lists and workflows to make it even more powerful. Using the lists tool, you can create a smart list that populates over time or target your emails based on list criteria. For example, you can create a list of people who clicked on an email, visited your pricing page, or mentioned you in social media. Workflows ensure that your leads interacting with email or other channels are given the proper messaging at the ideal time.

WordPress

  • WordPress does not offer contact lists, email, or workflows. Plugin support for such integration is limited and requires additional third party products to achieve the functionality.

Social Media

analytics_02

HubSpot

  • Using HubSpot's Social Inbox, customers can create a segmented stream of tweets based on customers, lead score, event, or anything else. You can also choose which keywords to follow, predict stream volume, and send alerts to team members based on who should take action. Social Inbox can also immediately identify someone's lifecycle stage, view the follower and following counts, reply, re-tweet, favorite, share, or email, view a record of the entire conversation, view the contact's sales rep to see if they had interaction, and view the full contact information. You can also figure out which social media channel was the most effective using HubSpot's powerful analytics.

WordPress

  • WordPress does not have a social media feature built into the core product. There are plugins or third-party integrations that can be used to replicate some of the important social media functions for marketers.

Marko Rapaic - HubSpot Testimonial
Where do I start? Thanks to HubSpot, gone are the days of insecure and unreliable hosting, the costs and intricacies of setting up SSL, inconsistent and jarring theme interfaces and theme quality; not to mention having to find and use a myriad of separate apps or plugins to accomplish tasks which should be do-able out of the box.

HubSpot gives you a refined, consistent, unified and secure platform upon which you can create or expand your inbound marketing strategies - it takes all of the tools an inbound marketer needs - blogging, lists & emails, site page creation, call-to-actions, SEO and analytics - and then bundles them together on a beautifully reliable and secure platform, complete with a support team that actually cares. We've never looked back!

Community & Support

Customer Service

hubspot_community

HubSpot

  • HubSpot has a full support team available to answer any questions you have. There is also a large following of value resources for customer support through multiple channels: Forums, HubSpot User Groups (HUGs) located across the country, LinkedIn groups, and the certified partner network.

WordPress

  • There is also a large community of WordPress users who offer support and solutions to other users through forums.

Training

analytics_02

HubSpot

WordPress

  • WordPress has Forums and Documentation available to assist with training. The training is specific to their product.

Technical Knowledge Requirement

HubSpot

  • HubSpot was built so users did not need technical knowledge to use it. The platform recognizes that the customers are marketers and business owners so you can create webpages, set up your blog, and post content without the knowledge of HTML and CSS.

WordPress

  • WordPress was built as a blogging platform in an open source community. While it has become more customized and no longer is just a blogging tool, it requires a significant amount of technical knowledge to attempt to provide all of the marketing features necessary to run a business.

Security

HubSpot

HubSpot encrypts customer web sessions in transmission leveraging a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate with a 256-bit AES key. We employ the following security measures in an effort to prevent unauthorized or unintended access to our internal network and computing devices:

  • Dedicated firewalls and VPN services

  • Enterprise-grade Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) on our public content network

  • Web Application Firewall (WAF) protecting our customers’ sites hosted with HubSpot

  • Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) mitigation services protecting our customers' sites hosted with HubSpot

  • Proactive scanning and network testing through third parties including McAfee ScanAlert and TrustWave

  • Comprehensive logging of all application access paths through web and application server logs

WordPress

  • Making sure your WordPress website is updated to the latest version can help fight against vulnerabilities.

  • Disable your WordPress theme editor to protect it if anyone logs into your site.

  • Download security plugins to protect your site against potential threats.

  • Ask your web host what you can do to prevent your site from being hacked.

  • Constantly back up your site so you do not lose any of the content.

  • Remove anything that says "Powered by WordPress." Hackers look for this phrase.

  • Visit the page Hardening WordPress for more details on protecting your site against security breaches.

Updates

HubSpot

  • HubSpot employs a world class engineering team. Updates are made every day based off of research and user testing. These updates are made behind the scenes so you never need to worry about updating your software.

WordPress

  • WordPress has a strong open source team, however, a drawback with open source is infrequent updates to the core product. Additionally, WordPress plugins that are offered by third parties are updated on their own schedule as they have no tie to the core product. The challenge with this is as updates are made, features unrelated to the plugin can stop working as the plugin system does not work directly with the core CMS. Significant technical savvy is required to ensure plugins are kept up to date and are not breaking features of the site.

Cost

HubSpot

  • HubSpot gives you an all-in-one platform with everything marketers need to do their jobs. The platform has extensive reporting to help you figure out where you are successful and where you can be more effective. There is also constant support, services like a dedicated inbound marketing consultant and account manager, and ongoing free training from the HubSpot Academy. Check out MIT's study on the ROI of Using HubSpot.

WordPress

  • WordPress is mostly free, but you do need to pay for the costs of hosting a web server, domain mapping, and the ability to edit the CSS (If these are options you want). With that, you get a CMS, basic reporting, and access to themes and plugins.
