If anything, having that human voice leading a brand works better from a sales perspective than ever before. But because of AI, your buyers aren’t connecting with you in the ways they used to. Your thought leadership posts on LinkedIn may go unread. Your founder-written blog posts are losing views in a zero-click world. The funnel has moved. People are finding brands through AI agents now, and you’re facing a dark funnel where much of your buyer’s journey is now invisible. So how do you meet buyers where they are if that place is hidden from view? And how do you even measure your efforts when so much of the funnel is unattributable? Founder-led sales doesn’t mean skipping AI altogether; this strategy involves using AI in smart ways that allow the founder more time and resources to connect and create.   ## What is "founder-led sales"? Founder-led sales is when the founder of a startup company becomes thoroughly involved in the startup’s selling processes and [sales strategy](https://www.hubspot.com/startups/resources/sales-strategies). This methodology allows startup founders to roll up their sleeves and become directly involved with the selling process, from defining the company’s overall sales strategy to making sales calls and taking meetings with clients.   ## Benefits of founder-led sales for your startup So, a startup founder hops on some sales calls or sends cold emails to potential clients. What’s the big deal? As it turns out, founder sales is a popular and effective way for startups to stand out from their competition, especially now as so many companies turn to AI for sales assistance. Startup founders have a deep well of knowledge in what they’re selling, and that passion for the company mission allows them to more authentically connect with potential clients. Authenticity stands out from a chatbot making sales. This method also allows founders to be the ones directly receiving feedback from clients, which shapes the future of the business. Here are some of the benefits of leading with founder sales as a startup: ### Unique knowledge about the business Who knows a business better than the founder? With a startup, the founder is typically the person who dreamed up the business and planned it all out, so they will have a strong sense of how the product will [solve specific client problems](https://www.hubspot.com/startups/solution-selling). That naturally makes the founder ready to sing the product’s praises to clients. ### Added credibility Then, there’s the credibility that founder sales add to the sales strategy. The founder will know the product better than anyone, so clients can trust that the founder knows all the features and how the product will solve the clients’ problems. Not only that, but AI search relies on credibility cues when determining what brands to recommend for certain user queries. More credibility equals higher AEO and better output rankings. ### Building connections with potential clients While startups need to gain new clients, customer loyalty and returning clientele are also essential to doing business. [According to Churnkey](https://churnkey.co/blog/customer-acquisition-vs-retention-cost-comparison-guide), acquiring a new customer can cost anywhere from three to 25 times more than retaining an existing one. Sure, you should always strive for more buyers, but customer loyalty can really pay off. So, how do you retain customers? By having the founder of the company speak directly with potential and recurring clients, they can put more trust in the brand and feel more secure in doing business with your startup. ### Better use of startup resources It’s no secret that startups, especially in the early stages, are strapped for funds. Rather than paying to hire sales reps and buy equipment for a bigger team, the startup can use founder sales to conserve money until revenue increases. Plus, the founder is already equipped with the knowledge and passion to sell the products, meaning the startup can save time and money on training sales reps, too. ### Direct feedback loop Client feedback is a pillar of any sales strategy, but when the founder of the company is the one communicating directly with clients, that feedback can have a much stronger impact. Founders have the power to make direct changes based on this feedback, unlike at major corporations, where customer service reps have to pass feedback up the chain of command before anything can be done.   ## Does founder-led sales still work in the age of AI? Founder-led sales can still be highly effective today. The latest challenge, though, is that the top of the funnel moved, and you cannot see most of it. It’s called a dark funnel discovery loop. To you, it looks like organic traffic, but there’s actually a lot more happening with buyers and your brand behind the scenes that you’re not seeing. Buyers turn to AI to research products to solve their problems, and that’s hard to trace. They research for solutions using AI, and AI offers your brand, referencing sources like forums and review sites. The buyer checks with their private communities, such as within Slack or Discord, for validation. All of this points the buyer to your website, but you’re not seeing it happen, making it difficult to track. You can put effort into AEO and GEO, but you have to pay close attention to your pipeline and AI visibility rather than just analyzing click-through rates. Then, add to the mix that founders themselves are connecting to their audience in private communities, over social media DMs, or through podcasts and forwarded newsletters. The success of these efforts are hard to link back to the original source of attribution. Founders can use surveys (asking “how did you hear about us? is a popular way to track down attribution), measure sales cycle velocity (you’ll notice shorter sales cycles thanks to the dark funnel), and even track spikes in website traffic to link them back to founder actions like engaging in a forum or recording as a guest on a podcast. These efforts can give you a better idea of the activity happening in the dark funnel. There’s a delicate balance in approaching founder-led sales. You need to be using AI to do more with a small team and stay competitive with other companies, but you don’t want to outsource your voice. Your voice is what’s going to make you stand out; when competitors turn everything over to AI, the humanization of your brand is what will be endearing, and memorable, to clients. Using AI for founder-led sales means your AI is more of an assistant, not the content creator. Here’s how you can balance human creativity with AI use for successful founder-led sales.   ### 1. Research and account prioritization Here’s where AI can really excel and save founders time in their sales motions. AI has a deep, extensive knowledge base and the power to sift through that data in seconds. Founders can and should use AI to research potential buyers and prioritize those that are more likely to convert. Automated prospecting and lead scoring allows founders to focus more on personalized messaging to said leads, rather than spending hours on manual research.   ### 2. Personalization Always edit any AI outputs. Even if you put in a long list of messy thoughts and have AI organize and edit it, you should re-read and edit the final draft. Add personal touches, especially for clients you’ve already had a meeting with or have extensive research on. Your authentic voice and personalization is what will make your outreach or content creation real. This is what will keep your brand from sounding like everyone else. ### 3. Notetaking automations With founder-led sales, you’re going to be taking a lot of meetings, and we mean *a lot*. You don’t have to spend time parsing through transcripts or replaying the audio again and again to nail down the main points. AI notetakers will do this for you. These tools can run in the background of your calls, automate transcripts, and summarize and highlight key points of the call. To toot our own horn, HubSpot’s [Smart Deal Progression](https://www.hubspot.com/startups/resources/tech-stack/smart-deal-progression-series-a) can automatically analyze your call transcripts and incorporate meeting notes and follow-ups directly in your CRM. I’m not *not* trying to sell you on it, but it really is handy for time-strapped founders. Regardless of whether or not you specifically use [Hubspot’s AI](https://www.hubspot.com/products/artificial-intelligence), please save yourself the time and hassle of manual notetaking and use an AI tool. AI will keep you focused on connecting authentically with leads, not taking notes during your calls.   ## Why founders need to build their personal brand Regardless of whether you feel more introverted or extroverted as a startup founder, building a personal brand is an important step to building credibility, expanding your network, and growing your business. ### Social media Many founders do this by creating engaging social media profiles and posts, particularly on LinkedIn. In fact, many startup founders today are driving millions of dollars to their companies just by having a strong personal brand online. Take, for instance, [Alex Boyd](https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexcboyd), co-founder of [DemandBird](https://demandbird.com/) and founder of [RevenueZen](https://revenuezen.com/), who posted recently on—you guessed it—LinkedIn about driving more than $9M in revenue through posting on this particular social media platform. Alex told us, "I was an early student of Hubspot. Throughout my early sales career, I adopted the approach of creating a 'warm aura of awareness' that made it way easier for me to close deals than going pure cold. This social selling approach, mostly focused on LinkedIn, allowed me to grow and exit a B2B marketing agency and then successfully found my current social media SaaS company.” But you don’t have to focus on making a sale with every post. Just by communicating with your audience naturally on LinkedIn and other social platforms, you can create organic interest in your startup. Similar to cold versus warm introductions, building a personal brand online driven by passion and industry knowledge will be far more authentic and fruitful than creating less personable sales content on your profile. Ultimately, the authenticity will help readers feel more connected to the startup founder, potentially even converting them into product users.   ## Just keep in mind: your brand is bigger than your LinkedIn LinkedIn can be a lucrative place for founders to build their personal brand, but there are other ways to make yourself known as a founder. So how do founders build a personal brand beyond LinkedIn? ### 1. Owned newsletters You probably subscribe to dozens of Substack, beehiiv, and other newsletters. It’s not in your imagination; founders and brands are turning to owned newsletters as part of their sales and content strategies. Owned newsletters give you direct access to your audience and metrics and are less vulnerable to platform policy and monetization changes, like those that happen on social media. #### 2. Short-form video Short-form videos can have extensive reach. Post a clip from speaking at a conference or simply spitting wisdom from your desk, and you can see shares across YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and more. #### 3. Podcasts Start your own or start making your way through the podcast circuit. You can build your brand and reach audiences by sharing your story and knowledge through podcasts. Start your own podcast to cater to your existing users, and/or reach out to podcast hosts you admire to see if you can fill a slot. Joining other podcasts as a guest allows you to expand your reach. No matter what method(s) you choose for building a personal brand, you have to keep your point of view as the top priority. Setting goals to post X times per week may help keep you motivated, but its your personal story and expertise that draws viewers and listeners, not your cadence.   ## Potential challenges of founder-led sales Using founder-led sales isn’t without its limitations, though. There are some things to consider before diving into this methodology, but by preparing for the challenges, you can better adapt and still get the most out of a founder-led sales strategy. ### Time limitations One of the biggest challenges to founder-led sales is time. In addition to pitching to investors, tailoring the business plan, and handling the financials at the beginning, founders would also need to make time to prepare and lead the sales strategy. To counter this limitation, founders will need to tap AI assistants or start hiring early employees to spread out some of the workload. ### Opportunity costs For every hour a founder is spending on sales calls or client meetings, they could be missing out on networking events or partnership meetings that are also essential to business. Unfortunately, kicking off the startup sales strategy with founder-led sales is only attainable for so long, and it’ll be important to have other tactics prepared for when the business scales. ### Untraceable attribution How do you measure founder-led sales when attribution is untraceable? You’ll need to reconsider your key metrics. Rather than focusing on last-touch, you have to rethink about attribution. Here’s how: - __Branded search:__ Keep tabs on search volume for your company’s name or your name. - __Direct traffic:__ Watch for traffic spikes and analyze the cause. Did a podcast episode you were a guest for just publish? Did someone just start a Reddit thread asking about experiences with your brand? - __Self reporting:__ Survey new leads and ask how they heard about your brand. Make note of these sources so you can better track attribution in the future. - __Model citation visibility:__ Research how and how frequently AI tools are referencing your brand. [HubSpot’s AI tools](https://www.hubspot.com/products/artificial-intelligence) include AI visibility functions to help you measure (and optimize) brand visibility.   ### Scaling beyond the founder By leading with founder sales, a startup may take longer to bring in dedicated sales reps or even a sales team, which could hinder the startup from closing more deals. When building a sales strategy involving founder-led sales, be sure to account for how the strategy will transition and delegate the work to sales reps as the business scales.   ## Finding your founder sales strategy It’s 2026. AI is everywhere. As a founder, you have to be using it to keep up with your competitors. But you have to be mindful that you don’t fall into the trap of sounding just like every other founder. As your selling motion becomes more and more automated, a real, human voice leading your brand is your differentiator. Whether it’s prepping for a sales call or writing blog and social media content to drive engagement, you have to center authenticity, originality, and above all, your humanity. Customers are looking for something real. Use AI as an assistant to automate manual, repetitive work. Don’t use it to ghostwrite your way into a deal. Replacing your creativity and experience with AI copy won’t work; it’s what the kids are calling AI slop. Your founder-led sales strategy, at its core, is relying on the founder’s voice. Make sure to speak loudly. ## Send DataSend DataSend DataSend DataSend DataSend Data Send DataSend DataSend DataSend DataSend DataSend DataSend DataSend Data ## You might also like these... ![startup-sales-pitch-hero](https://www.hubspot.com/hs-fs/hubfs/HSFS%20Microsite/hsfs_blogs/startup-sales-pitch-hero.png?width=567&height=297&name=startup-sales-pitch-hero.png) ### 8 Essentials for an Effective Startup Sales Pitch Preparing for a meeting with a potential investor or client?
