Decoding the VC Mindset: Key Factors Investors Seek in Startups

Explore the insights from top VCs as they delve into the key factors investors seek in startups, the significance of founder storytelling, and trends shaping the future of the venture capital landscape.  This was one of four workshops at our Startup Success event in London, England. Done in partnership with SeedLegals and Notion.

In an informative panel discussion, venture capitalists (VCs) shared insights into the mindset and strategies that guide their investment decisions, illuminating the path for aspiring entrepreneurs and startups. The discussion was moderated by Jonny Seamanfrom Seedlegals, and included panelists Oli Hammond of Fuel Ventures, Laura McGinnis of Balderton Capital, and Hanel Baveja of Creandum Ventures, who each brought a unique perspective to the conversation.

Journey into Venture Capital

The panelists kicked off by discussing their unconventional paths into the venture capital industry. Oli started with a history degree from the University of Kent and ventured into the startup ecosystem before joining Fuel Ventures, a startup venture capital fund. Laura transitioned from operating in the corporate world of Abercrombie and H&M to startups and eventually to venture capital after a period of reflection during the pandemic. Hanel, driven by a desire to explore business opportunities in New York City, moved from a startup to growth-stage investing at Insight Venture Partners before joining early-stage European firm Creandum.

Investment Strategies and Insights

A significant takeaway from the panel was the diversity in investment strategies and what VCs look for in startups. Oli emphasized the importance of founders in the pre-seed and seed stages. Fuel Ventures looks for exceptional founders with compelling ideas backed by some initial revenue as a diligence mitigator. Laura highlighted the importance of a company's second or third product being customer-driven rather than solely guided by VC demands.

Meanwhile, Hanel pointed out the ambitious storytelling often seen in U.S. startups, where founders emphasize their vision to create global businesses—a strategy that European founders can learn from.

The Role of Founders and Storytelling

The panelists stressed the core role of founders in investment decisions. The narrative founders tell about themselves, their capabilities, and their vision can significantly impact investor interest. Both Oli and Laura noted that storytelling is essential, with Laura emphasizing that European founders often need to better articulate their stakes and unique value proposition.

Comparative Insights and Regional Differences

Differences between U.S. and European startups were discussed, with a focus on the market size and storytelling approach. In the U.S., the large single market often gives startups initial scale, while European startups must consider broader market strategies from the onset. The discussion also touched upon the tendency of founders to concentrate in major capitals within Europe, potentially limiting broader ambition and reach.

Looking Ahead: Future Trends in VC

The panel concluded with a look at future trends, focusing on areas like AI's integration into replacing legacy systems, electrification in energy, and niche B2B SaaS opportunities using AI to enhance growth margins. The collaborative spirit and relentless innovation drive of founders were praised, though the panelists expressed a desire for improved understanding in the wider investment community about the inherent risks and potential failures of startup investments.

With these insights and reflections, the panel provided a comprehensive overview of the venture capital landscape, the factors influencing investment decisions, and the evolving trends that are shaping the future of startups globally.
