Introducing Brock Fleming, Project Manager at HubSpot. When he's not helping to make the lives of other Project and Program Managers easier, he's indirectly supporting our customers via our Partners and their accreditations. Most importantly, he's a proud father making the most of HubSpot's flexible work options to maximize quality family time. Continue reading to delve into a day in his life.

Can you tell us a little about your background and journey to HubSpot?
After working for nearly 9 years at a small retail furniture company, I felt the need to change things up. With my family growing and wanting a better work-life balance, I decided to explore new opportunities. I came across a project management job opening at HubSpot, a company I had never heard of before. I decided to apply for it and soon enough, I got the job. The rest, as they say, is history.

What work option did you pick and why?
I selected @home due to its flexibility as a parent of three young children. It allows me to take my children to school, exercise, walk, and do other small things around the house like getting a jump on dinner before everyone gets home.

Describe a typical day in your role.
My daily routine varies from day to day. Some days are jam-packed with meetings while other days are more focused on strategic planning to avoid missing any project milestones. I usually spend my time checking in with stakeholders, building relationships with members of the project team, and planning our next step in a project. I make sure to prioritize tasks and remain organized to ensure everything runs smoothly.

What is your #HubSpot Community?
I am a part of two main communities, namely the BlackHub and Families@HubSpot Slack groups. BlackHub is where I feel most at home, and I appreciate the community check-ins that help us build stronger bonds. Families@HubSpot is also a great community that provides an opportunity to learn from other families and helps me realize that I am not alone in the challenges I face as a parent.

When was the last time you left your professional and/or personal comfort zone?
When we had our third child, I was hesitant to take advantage of the 16-week paid parental leave. I was worried about how others would perceive me taking that much time off. However, my manager at the time (shout out to Angie O’Dowd) reassured me and made me feel comfortable taking the time off. Looking back, I am glad that I took the parental leave. Those four months spent with my wife and newborn were some of the best moments of my life.

Tell us about a challenge you're working to solve right now.
One of my side projects is to streamline the project initiation process for project and program managers. I’m working on creating centralized resources that project and program managers can use whenever they start a new project. I’m also in the process of creating semi-frequent connection points for these groups to collaborate, exchange ideas, share best practices, and mutually learn from one another.

How are you solving for the customer?
My role is to indirectly address customer needs by focusing on supporting HubSpot partners. As a member of the Partner Strategy and Operations team, I am responsible for managing the Accreditations project. This project involves granting accreditations to partners based on their expertise in a specific field. Accreditations serve as proof of the partner's mastery in a particular subject, making it easier for customers to identify and choose partners with tried-and-true experience in the required service.

In your own words, what makes working at HubSpot unique?
HubSpot is doing a lot of things right. The company offers unlimited paid time off (PTO), restricted stock units (RSUs), 16 weeks of paid parental leave for primary and secondary caregivers, no meeting Fridays, and a week-long company holiday called the Global Week of Rest that allows employees to rest and recharge without having to come back to work with swarms of emails. In addition, for every 5 years of service, they grant employees a 4-week sabbatical break. However, what I appreciate the most about HubSpot is the leadership's transparency in their decision-making process and their willingness to seek employee feedback on ways to improve the company.

What's something that nobody would know about you?
I wrote and sang a song for my wife on our wedding day

What do you do outside of work?
As a soon-to-be family of six, I thoroughly enjoy all aspects of parenting. Spending time with our kids is a joy, whether it's exploring the magic of Disney parks or playing a game of soccer or basketball in the backyard. However, I also value the opportunities to be alone, whether it's diving into a good book, going for a run, or planning which Funko Pop I want to collect next.
