No stranger to the pivot, Cameron Bruns Ewing has gone from a law firm to sustainable e-commerce to marketing communications to present; sales at HubSpot. In her role, she is coaching and enabling Inbound Success Coaches (ISCs) globally.
Let's get to know Cameron!
Can you tell us a little about your background and journey to HubSpot?
My career has been a winding road!
I graduated with a government degree and moved to Boston, where I worked at a law firm for three years while deciding whether or not I wanted to attend law school. Ultimately I concluded that law was too reactive for me, so instead, I pursued roles that pushed for more proactive change in the world around us. I helped start an e-commerce company that sold sustainable homewares and then managed marketing & communications for a global environmental organization for several years.
Around this time, my partner was offered an opportunity to move to Ireland for his role at a company we know and love, HubSpot! So naturally, we jumped at the chance to move abroad! Once in Ireland, I needed a job too, and by that time, I had heard so many wonderful things about HubSpot that I made a career pivot and took an entry-level role on HubSpot's sales team as an Inbound Success Coach. After a bit of a transition, I achieved success for myself as a President's Club winner in 2020, and now I'm giving back to the team by serving as a team lead where I focus on coaching & enabling ISCs globally!
Describe a typical day in your role.
I'm a mom, so I always start my day by making my daughter breakfast, getting her dressed & packed for daycare. Then, I can finally sit down with a cup of coffee and start reviewing slacks around 8:30 am. I'm an "Inbox 0" person, so getting through all the slacks and emails first helps me make my to-do list and focus for the rest of the day. I LIVE by my to-do list in Google Tasks!
My workload and number of meetings vary weekly based on what projects I'm working on and what new enablement content I'm helping roll out to the team. Typically I'll have 3-4 project-based meetings per day and spend the rest of the time building out content, managing communications, or providing live support to folks on-channel (managing HubSpot's live chat!). I usually have lunch at my desk so that I can have a longer break in the afternoon to do a peloton ride and take a shower - being able to do this while my daughter is still at daycare helps keep me sane!
The afternoon is a balance of meeting time & focus time. I finish around 5pm and completely disconnect from work for the evening so that I can spend quality time with my family.
Tell us about a problem you're working to solve right now.
One of the main projects I've been working on for the Inbound Success Coach (ISC) team is how to measure the quality of our team's conversations over live chat. At HubSpot, we have a lot of great reporting tools that give us insights into the quantitative aspects of an ISC's work (how quickly they respond to incoming chats, how many chats they are taking, how many chats they hand off to the sales team, etc.), but we didn't previously have a standard quality assurance model. That's what I've been working to build out with one of my colleagues over the past several months.
How are you solving for the customer?
I solve for HubSpot customers (and future customers!) by equipping ISC agents with the right product knowledge, business acumen, and communication skills to match users with the best next steps for getting their business pains solved through HubSpot solutions!
In your own words, what makes working in tech at HubSpot unique?
I've worked in a bunch of different industries, and so far, HubSpot has been the most fast-paced. There's so much going on all of the time. It's really inspiring to be surrounded by so much passion, so many ideas, and such a consistent high level of excitement!
Are there any industry trends or topics that are exciting to you right now?
Chat AI!!! Having worked in the human-run chat world for the past four years, I'm super interested to see where generative AI can take us. Chat is such a convenient platform for users and there's so much potential for how AI chat can shape the way we manage business challenges.
What do you like to do outside of HubSpot in your free time?
I spend as much time with my daughter as I possibly can! Since she's in daycare 40 hours a week, I really savor evenings and weekends with her. Once she's in bed, I catch up on my favorite Bravo shows so I can chat about them in the HubSpot slack channel dedicated to Bravo fans! It's the best. My husband and I also love hiking and visiting local breweries.
