Frequently Asked Questions

  •

When you visit an unsecured website, your browser makes a connection with that site and transmits information in the public. Filling out a form, or entering your credit card on an unsecured website means that hackers could intercept the information and thus steal your data.

By comparison, a secure website with SSL enabled will establish a tunnel between the server that hosts the website and your browser. Any hackers that try to intercept information fundamentally cannot access the tunnel -- and thus any information you share on the site is secure. The secure connection and authentication happens in the background in mere fractions of a second and will not affect your website performance. For more information about SSL, we recommend reading, A Beginner's Guide to SSL: What It Is & Why It Makes Your Website More Secure, where we describe further how SSL actually works.

There are a number of visual cues that are immediately apparent for any website enabled with SSL. Let's go through a few of them:

    • HTTPS: Within the URL of your browser you may commonly see "http://" When the additional 's' is present it will display as "https://" and visitors will be able to tell the site is secure. Many common social media and e-commerce websites have SSL enabled where you can see the HTTPS protocol.
    • In some browsers, such as Google Chrome, the URL bar will say "Secure" and display a green lock icon when visiting a site that has SSL enabled.
    • Some websites, primarily e-commerce, will add a badge to the web page indicating it's secure.
  • Yes! Depending on your subscription, and your security needs, you can enable it across all your content -- such as website, landing pages, and blog. Please refer to the table above for the number of subdomains you can encrypt based on your subscription tier.
