About the Connected Email Integrations Team:

Step into the core of HubSpot's 1:1 email strategy with the Connected Email Integrations team! We are the engine that powers the connection of personal inboxes like Gmail and Outlook to our customers' CRM, a critical function for Sales Hub and Service Hub users. You'll help us connect upmarket customers to secure environments, kickstart new customer journeys with comprehensive historical email sync, and ensure rock-solid 1:1 email deliverability. Our mission is to provide a flawless integration-as-a-service for internal HubSpot product teams, guaranteeing that every email is handled with maximum reliability and efficiency.

The Opportunity: Technical Lead II

As a Technical Lead II on the Connected Email Integrations team, you will be a player-coach, leading a dedicated team of approximately 3-5 engineers. You are, first and foremost, a skilled and passionate engineer who thrives on building and creating. This role offers a unique blend of hands-on technical contribution (approximately 75% of your time) and technical leadership responsibilities (25%), where you'll guide your team in designing, developing, and maintaining high-quality, scalable, and reliable integration solutions.

What You'll Do:

  • Technical Excellence & Hands-on Development:
    • Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain robust backend services and APIs for email integrations, primarily using Java, Kafka, HBase, and MySQL.
    • Tackle complex technical challenges such as enhancing security for upmarket customer integrations, optimizing email synchronization, and ensuring high deliverability rates for 1:1 emails.
    • Champion best practices in software development, including code quality, testing, CI/CD, and observability.
    • Dive deep into architectural decisions, contribute significantly to the codebase, and lead by example in technical execution.
  • Product & Team Leadership:
    • Collaborate closely with Product Managers, Designers, and other Technical Leads to define a compelling vision and challenging goals for your team, aligned with the needs of Sales Hub and Service Hub.
    • Actively contribute to shaping the product direction and strategy for connected email integrations, bringing your technical expertise and insights to the forefront.
    • Proactively own and improve your team's operational health, including on-call processes, system reliability (for 1.7M+ inboxes and growing), and overall product quality. Ensure processes are lean, effective, and support rapid, reliable delivery.
    • Partner with other Tech Leads to resolve cross-team dependencies and drive broader technical initiatives within the Messaging Platform Group.
  • Lead and Mentor: Guide and mentor a team of software engineers, fostering an environment of autonomy, psychological safety, and continuous learning. You'll be actively involved in their growth, helping them tackle increasingly complex challenges and develop into senior engineers, future Tech Leads, and Staff Engineers.
  • Performance & Growth:
    • Evaluate the performance of your team members, providing constructive feedback, coaching, and identifying learning opportunities to support their career progression.

We're Looking For Someone Who:

  • Is an experienced Senior Software Engineer with a proven track record of designing and delivering complex, scalable backend systems, ideally with experience in email systems or high-volume integrations.
  • Has some prior experience leading small engineering teams or mentoring junior engineers.
  • Possesses strong proficiency in Java, Kafka, HBase and MySQL, and experience with distributed systems, APIs, and cloud platforms.
  • Is passionate about writing clean, maintainable, and well-tested code, and enjoys code reviews and technical discussions.
  • Excels at fostering an inclusive team environment that encourages autonomy, psychological safety, and open communication.
  • Sets a high bar for system reliability and operational excellence, with experience in managing on-call rotations and incident response for critical services.
  • Understands the value of building diverse teams and actively champions Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging.
  • Is an excellent communicator and collaborator, able to articulate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Is eager to learn and adapt, and enjoys coaching others while also being open to learning from them.
